Intensive Seminar for Middle Years Teachers of Japanese

Aims:

Participants will develop basic language skills and gain confidence in using Japanese by working in an authentic Japanese environment suited to their level.

Participants will develop their knowledge of teaching strategies by working together through various activities which they can then apply to their own classrooms. Specific methodologies include Intercultural Language Learning (ILL) and technology based learning.

Participants will create new teacher networks and share ideas and resources.

 
Eligibility:
  • Teachers of native or near native speaker proficiency are not a target of this seminar.

  • This course is aimed at current teachers of middle years level Japanese, who have at least one (1) year’s Japanese language teaching experience.
  • Candidates must currently be teaching a minimum of three (3) hours of Japanese language per week.

  • This course is aimed at teachers who have a knowledge of basic grammar, and are able to read and write hiragana and katakana. This is approximately equivalent to level N5 (former level 4) of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

  • Candidates must not have attended any Intensive Seminar for Japanese Teachers at the Japan Foundation, Sydney, within the past two (2) years.

  • Teachers in regional areas who have little or no opportunity to attend professional development workshops will be given higher priority.

NOTE: Participants must be able to attend the 3.5 day seminar in full.

Application for this seminar must be submitted to your school’s relevant educational authority (e.g. Department of Education, Catholic Education Commission, Association of Independent Schools) in your state/territory.  Please check with the relevant authority regarding their deadline for applications.

Applications sent directly to the Japan Foundation, Sydney will not be considered.

Guidelines
Costs The Japan Foundation, Sydney will be collaborating with education authorities and some schools around Australia and New Zealand, to provide some financial support for teachers to attend this seminar. The various costs associated with this seminar are outlined below:
1. Seminar Fee:
There is a Seminar Fee of $200 per participant - To be covered by the education authority, participant or their school. Payable by bank transfer to The Japan Foundation, Sydney, after acceptance.
2. Travel:
Travel to and from the Japan Foundation in Sydney is to be covered by the education authority, participant or their school.
3. Accommodation:
The Japan Foundation, Sydney will provide support for twin share accommodation plus continental breakfast for 16 participants. The remaining participants may be funded by their respective education authority, school or other source of funding.

All accommodation will be organised by the Japan Foundation, Sydney on behalf of all participants for the seminar period only (unless own arrangements are opted for).

Standard accommodation arrangements are twin share plus continental breakfast, for $380pp (4 nights). Alternatively, participants may upgrade their accommodation to single room for an additional $330pp (4 nights) total = $710. This optional extra will not be covered by The Japan Foundation, Sydney.

The Japan Foundation will not cover any incidental costs (such as room service and telephone calls) – all such costs will be the responsibility of the participant.

4. Meals:
The Japan Foundation, Sydney will be providing all seminar participants with an opening night welcome dinner, a closing ceremony lunch, and refreshments and snacks for morning and afternoon tea.

All participants will have a continental breakfast arranged for them as part of the standard accommodation package unless otherwise requested. Breakfast will be available at the hotel on each morning of the seminar.

All other meals will be the responsibility of the participant.
