Time Crevasse
13 September – 30 November

The Yokohama Triennale 2008 will be held in Japan in the northern autumn.
This year’s Triennale is the third in this series of international exhibitions of contemporary art, having previously been staged in 2001 and 2005.

In keeping with the theme set by the artistic director, Mr Tsutomu Mizusawa, the Triennale will display a diverse range of works – using various media, including video, installations, photography, painting and sculpture – by 80 carefully selected artists from around the world.  Showcasing, mainly through new works, the very latest developments in contemporary art from all over the globe, the Triennale will unfold on the scale of an art festival, involving the local community and featuring many site-specific works that will highlight the distinctive character of the host city, Yokohama.  A vigorous programme of supplementary events will be conducted during the exhibition period, including symposiums to flesh out the Triennale’s conceptual framework, and various workshops, gallery talks and other forums for discussion among the artists and other participants and visitors to the exhibition.  The Triennale will also seek to establish and strengthen ties with art-related organisations and other international exhibitions both in Japan and overseas.

The theme for the 2008 Triennale is ‘Time Crevasse’.  Triennale Artistic Director and Chief Curator at The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama, says that art “shakes up our everyday perceptions [and] gives us glimpses of the ‘abyss’ we normally fail to notice,” and expresses his hope that the third Triennale “will constitute for Yokohama an important step forward in its cultural maturation”.

The Yokohama Triennale 2008 will run from 13 September to 30 November 2008.
