JEWELS OF KYOTO

Maiko are apprentices of Geiko (Geisha), traditional Japanese female artists who have done rigorous training and are accomplished in the Japanese arts, such as tea ceremony, flower arrangement and traditional dancing. Always elaborately and immaculately-dressed, Maiko are one of the most unique and distinct embodiments of high culture in Japanese classical arts.

Experience the Japanese classical arts through our Jewels of Kyoto performance and demonstration where two Maiko and two Geiko will be visiting Australia from Kyoto. They will introduce their culture and life, perform traditional dances and share a mini lesson on the gentle and refined dialect of Kyoto, known as Kyokotoba.

Following the Sydney performance, the maiko group will also hold performances in Perth (27 Feb), Auckland (1 Mar) and Wellington (5 Mar). Sydney school group performances (primary and high school) on 24 Feb are also available. Please contact coordinators@jpf.org.au or 02 8239 0055. See flyer for more details.

A free film screening of the musical comedy-drama Lady Maiko will also be held at The Japan Foundation, Sydney.
