36 year old Toru has spent half his life living outside of Japan. His years away from his seaside home in North Kyoto Prefecture have allowed him to step back from his own culture and analyse it from many different perspectives. In his efforts to understand and learn about the west, Toru believes he has developed a deeper respect and understanding for his homeland and culture than if he had stayed in Japan.

His childhood years were spent in a country town, which like many others, was left behind by a Japan pre-occupied with economic growth and literally in the middle of a cold war. Feeling a sense of isolation, Toru often visited the local cinema, his only window to the outside world. His formative years, were punctuated with images of far away places, this was a source of wonder and curiosity to him. A burning desire to capture images, to share with others became the dominant force in his life.

Now based in Sydney, Toru works as a professional cinematographer on commercial and documentary film shoots. He maintains his love of cinematography and spends his free time working on collaborative experimental films and short films.
