Living in 9 different countries has allowed me to develop a genuine appreciation for local art and craft forms and learn some of the techniques. More importantly I was taught to see objects, landscape and miscellaneous scenes from the local perspective. My vision field increased while living 10 years in a remote town in northern Western Australia, I was able to gradually develop my own art form based on Chigiri-E. I use paper as medium. Ninety percent of these papers I make myself using Kozo and Mitsumata bark. Paper is always warm to touch and carries the energy of organic life not found in other materials like oil paint, gouache, etc. With paper I can depict both the unassuming beauty and resilience of the magnificent Western Australian wildflowers and bushland. They soak their amazing colours and take various textures. I realized my dream of using the Japanese paper making technique to depict harsh yet serene Australian landscapes.
