II. Japanese Language Education Overseas

How do the grant programs work?
 
The Japan Foundation grant programmes run according to the Japanese fiscal year, which begins on 1 April and ends on 31 March the following year.
 
Local Grants
 

The Japan Foundation, Sydney is now offering two local grants.


1. Support Program for Seminars and Conferences Furthering Japanese-Language Education
This program is designed to provide partial aid for seminars, workshops, training courses and academic meetings concerning Japanese-language education carried out by Australian teachers’ associations, academic societies and higher educational and research institutions.

2. Support Program for Assistance for Establishing Japanese Programs
From 2010, this grant will support schools which are starting a new Japanese Language program for the first time. It aims to support schools through monetary donation to purchase teaching materials in order to set up their program.

The Japan Foundation, Sydney office has been appointed by our Headquarters to develop new programs according to the requirements of Japanese language education in learning institutes in Australia. This is a fresh start in regards to the way aid is provided. The Japan Foundation, Sydney are currently developing new grant programs such as the support of resource materials for new schools or institutions and grants for Japanese Language events held in states/territories throughout Australia. As we are currently developing new programs, further details will be made available in February 2010.

Training Programs for Leading Teachers of the Japanese Language
These programs aim to advance the level of education and nurture research capabilities in persons playing a leading role in the teaching of Japanese-language on a national or regional level, and individuals who are expected to play a leading role in Japanese-language education in the future.

Advanced Training Program for Teachers of the Japanese Language
Provides teachers of the Japanese language with an opportunity to improve their language skills and teaching methodology, and to deepen their knowledge of Japan. Conducted in Urawa, Japan. The Japan Foundation covers the cost of tuition, accommodation and meals; however, from this year participants must bear the cost of their own round-trip air ticket.

Short- and Long-Term Training Programs for Foreign Teachers of the Japanese Language
Provides teachers of the Japanese language with an opportunity to improve their language skills and teaching methodology, and to deepen their knowledge of Japan. Conducted in Urawa, Japan. Graduate Program on the Japanese Language and Culture (Master's Course)
This program is designed to provide teachers of the Japanese language abroad and/or individuals who have experience in teaching the Japanese language abroad, who are expected to be leaders of the academic world of Japanese language education in their own countries, with an opportunity to obtain a Master’s degree in Japanese language education.

Graduate Program on the Japanese Language and Culture (Doctor's Course)
This program is designed to provide teachers of the Japanese language abroad and/or individuals who have experience teaching the Japanese language in overseas Japanese language institutions, with an opportunity to complete a three-year doctoral course in Japanese language education, with the aim of developing them as future leaders of the academic world of Japanese language education in their own countries. Apart from the Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute (JFJLI), the program is being implemented in collaboration with the National Institute for the Japanese Language (NIJLA) and the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) and is structured with an advanced and practical curriculum.
 
Japanese Language Programs for Specialists
Training for specialists requiring Japanese language ability for their particular vocation or academic purpose. Conducted in Kansai, Japan.

TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR TEACHERS OF THE JAPANESE LANGUAGE
(Short Term and Long Term)
I teach Japanese part-time - am I eligible to apply?
No. You should be teaching Japanese full-time at the time of application, and expect to continue teaching Japanese full-time next year.
I teach Japanese as a private tutor - am I eligible to apply?
No. You must be teaching Japanese at a recognised educational institution (school, university or college).
I am a native speaker of Japanese - am I eligible to apply?
No. These programmes are specifically tailored for non-native speakers of Japanese. As of this year, the Training Program for Japanese Abroad has been discontinued.
Do I have to have sat for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test?
No. The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is not a prerequisite for these programs, however it is used as a benchmark when determining applicantsf Japanese language ability. If you have never sat for the JLPT, you may be asked to complete the Japanese Language Proficiency Self-Check questionnaire and submit it with your application.

ADVANCED TRAINING PROGRAM FOR TEACHERS OF THE JAPANESE LANGUAGE
I am a native speaker, am I eligible for this grant?
Yes. This is the only grant that native speakers are eligible for.
What types of projects would be accepted for the Advanced Training Program?
Example programs that would be accepted are syllabus and curriculum programs as well as the development of teaching materials.
I received a grant from The Japan Foundation last year. When am I eligible to apply again?
One year must elapse before being eligible to receive a further grant from The Japan Foundation.
Can team members be from different organizations or reside in different countries?
Yes. All members do not have to belong to the same institution in the same country however it does exclude members residing in Japan.
 
JAPANESE-LANGUAGE PROGRAM FOR SPECIALISTS
Who is eligible for this grant?
People of the following professions can apply for this grant, librarians, curators, post graduate students, scholars and researchers.
I am not fluent in Japanese. Am I eligible for this program?
Yes. To be successful you only have to have the equivalent proficiency of Level 3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test at the time of your application.
