NALSSP - Japan Foundation In-Country Study Tour 2009

In October 2009 11 ACT teachers participated in an in- country study tour to Japan with a 10 day language and culture program at the Japan Foundation Language Institute in Osaka. This project was an integral part of the ACT DET’s NALSSP strategy and followed 20 weeks of University study.

The JF program was intended to provide teachers with the opportunity to refresh their language skills in country as well as provide a diverse range of cultural experiences. For two of the teachers involved this was their first trip to Japan and for many the first trip in decades. For all those involved the study tour allowed them the opportunity to realise the improvement in their language skills in a practical real life context.

The JF Language Institute Kansai School is located close to Osaka International Airport with views of the ocean from communal living spaces. While some distance from the city centre, teachers found the local area offered substantial potential for resource collection with several large bookstores, specialty stores and discount retailers. The JF language school also has a well stocked bookstore and library and computer lab. Feedback from participants indicated an exceptionally high degree of satisfaction both with the program offered by Japan Foundation and the facilities provided. All the institute staff, admin, teachers and canteen staff were overwhelming helpful with exceptional attention to detail to ensure teachers comfort and well being.

A Primary School visit was exceptionally well organised and provided and ideal opportunity for teachers to experience Japanese school life. Teachers enjoyed the opportunity to deliver a lesson to a class as well as the chance to take photos/videos and make personal observations during lessons and lunch/cleaning time.

The Cultural tour Component hosted by a knowledgeable guide included three single day trips to Himeji Castle, Nara and Kyoto and provided teachers with a diverse range of cultural experiences.

The flexibility of the JF staff and willingness to devise a program specifically suited to our needs has ensured extremely positive outcomes for our teachers. The attention to detail, personal service and consideration displayed by every member of staff ensured an exceptional experience. Teacher’s language skills, cultural understandings, teaching strategies and resource collections have all improved as a direct result of this program. We are extremely grateful for the opportunities this program provided to our teaching staff and to Japan Foundation, Sydney and Osaka who contributed to creating such a valuable program.
