ABOUT THE JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST

Would you like to take up the challenge and assess your ability in Japanese?
You may be pleasantly surprised!

  • You can improve your Japanese by preparing for the JLPT
  • The JLPT is known and recognized worldwide
  • In 2009 approximately 770,000 learners took the test in 54 countries
  • The JLPT is open to all ages and levels of Japanese learners (including teachers!)
As the number of people studying Japanese rapidly increased worldwide, so too did the opportunities to use it in a wide variety of fields. This lead to the demand by learners of Japanese for a means of assessing and accrediting their language proficiency. The JLPT was created to respond to this demand in 1984. The JLPT is conducted both in Japan and overseas primarily for the assessment and accreditation of non-native speakers of Japanese. Inside Japan the test is conducted by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, and outside Japan by the Japan Foundation.
