Intensive Seminar - Guideline
Intensive Seminar for Senior Secondary Teachers of Japanese 14-17 April 2008
Aim:
Participants will deepen their knowledge of language pedagogies and practices by working together through various activities which they can then apply to their own classrooms. Specific pedagogies include Intercultural Language Teaching and Learning (ILTL) and collaborative learning using IT. By working in a Japanese immersion environment, participants will also upgrade their language proficiency.
 
Eligibility:
  • This course is intended for current teachers of Senior Secondary level Japanese (Australia Years 10-12, New Zealand Years 11-13), who have completed at least one (1) year’s Japanese language teaching experience.
  • Candidates must currently be teaching a minimum of three (3) hours of Japanese language per week, on a face-to-face basis.
  • Candidates must be able to read and write hiragana, katakana and at least 200 kanji.
  • Candidates must not have attended any Intensive Seminar for Japanese Teachers at the Japan Foundation, Sydney, within the past two (2) years.
  • Teachers in regional areas who have little or no opportunity to attend professional development workshops will be given higher priority.

Costs:
Seminar Fee: $200 per person (payable by cheque to The Japan Foundation, Sydney after acceptance) This includes a new resource kit valued at $50.

Flights to and from Sydney: To be covered by the individual
 
Accommodation:

 The Japan Foundation will provide accommodation for the seminar period only, checking in on Sunday 13 April and departing on Thursday 17 April (4 nights). Rooms will be shared between two people; however, participants may elect to stay in single rooms by paying the balance of the room rate themselves. The Japan Foundation will not cover any incidental costs (such as breakfast and other meals, room service and telephone calls) - all such costs shall be the responsibility of the participant.

  • Introduction and analysis of new resources
  • IT technologies for classrooms and teacher networks
  • Workshops on ILTL
  • Project work involving interviews with native speakers
  • Ideas sharing and networking
  • Calligraphy
  • Japanese film viewing (optional)

Application Procedure:

Applications for this seminar must be submitted to your school’s relevant educational authority (eg. Department of Education, Catholic Education Commission, Association of Independent Schools) in your state.  Please check with the relevant authority regarding their deadline for applications.

Applications sent directly to the Japan Foundation, Sydney will not be considered.
