Tsutsugaki Yuzen by Shumei Kobayashi

Tsutsugaki Yuzen is a classical Japanese hand-dyeing technique which evolved over 400 years ago and uses similar methods to Batik. Shumei has been perfecting his art for over 30 years, and is a leading artist in this practice. His work has been exhibited throughout Japan, and twice previously at the Japan Foundation, Sydney, where his work and demonstrations proved to be extremely popular. For this exhibition, Shumei will be bringing a completely new collection of large, dynamic works.

Shumei will be in the gallery from 11 am – 4 pm each day during the exhibition, creating four completely new works. Do not miss this unique opportunity!

Shumei is best known for his exquisitely designed noren (doorway hangings).
