TRADITIONAL PAPER CRAFTS
from Yamaga City

Local craft makers from Yamaga city in Kyushu will be in Sydney for a one-off workshop, demonstrating the intricacy and skill behind making three Japanese paper crafts – lantern, umbrella and fan making. These unique paper crafts have been an intrinsic part of the city’s culture for centuries but in modern times have almost died out. They are now enjoying a revival thanks to the efforts of these master craft makers.

Come and watch these special guests from Japan as they demonstrate their craft.

Kiyoshi Nakashima – is one of the only five people left in Japan who make paper lanterns.
Takashi Yoshida – has been working to revive the lost craft of umbrella making and now makes 30 umbrellas a month.
Ryouichi Kurikawa – is the fourth generation owner of Kurikawa Store, which continues to produce and sell fans.
