BIZEN-YAKI

Pottery with a history spanning 1,000 years.

Bizen-yaki is the oldest style of pottery in Japan. Bizen ware is left unglazed and then fired over a long period of time. Special techniques are used to capture the natural attributes of the high quality clay, resulting in simple, earthy pieces. The final appearance depends on natural processes occurring on their own in the kiln.

Kazu Fujiwara, a famous Bizen-yaki practitioner, will travel from Japan to be here in Sydney to demonstrate the Bizen technique. Born into a famous family of Bizen potters, both Fujiwara’s grandfather and father were named National Living Treasures.
