Sayuki: Inside the Flower and Willow World |
|
| |
The world of the geisha in Japan is known as the karyūkai or ‘The Flower and Willow World’ and has long held a fascination for Westerners and Japanese alike. It is a community which has often been closed to all but a fortunate few who possess the resources and connections required to experience the karyūkai first-hand.
The Japan Foundation is delighted to welcome a special guest to Sydney to present a talk and give us a glimpse into the ‘Flower and Willow World’. Sayuki is a geisha who debuted in December 2007 in Asakusa, one of the oldest of Tokyo’s six remaining geisha districts. She is also the first Western woman in the 400-year history of the geisha to be accepted, undertake training and formally debut as a geisha.
Sayuki is Australian, and an Oxford-trained anthropologist and documentary filmmaker specialising in intensive anthropological documentaries. She has spent half of her life in Japan, went through Japanese schools, and graduated from Japan’s oldest university, Keio. Sayuki has lectured at a number of universities around the world, has published extensively on Japanese culture, and is also an anthropological film director with production credits on a wide range of international broadcasters.
During her training and since her debut as a geisha, Sayuki has been doing anthropological fieldwork in the geisha community in Asakusa and will talk about her life there, how she became a geisha, and what is involved in a geisha debut.
Sayuki’s talk will include film footage from her debut and also footage from some of the documentaries that have been made about her over the past year.
We have had an overwhelming response to Sayuki’s visit, and would like to thank everyone for their interest. Unfortunately the event is now full and we can no longer accept bookings. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. |
