| Part of a worldwide tour, Japanese Pottery: the Rising Generation from Traditional Kilns introduces to us outstanding works by a new generation of Japanese artists. The 35 selected for this exhibition are seen as Japan’s most promising artists, tipped to be the nation’s future leaders in ceramic arts.
Focusing on “vessels”, the exhibition illustrates how the artists understand the function of the vessel while attempting to grasp the nature of Japanese pottery today. In accordance with the footsteps of their predecessors, they actively pursue ever-richer standards in their craft and explore the creation of new individualistic forms.
The general thrust of the production policy differs between each artist. Some work in places where pottery has been made for centuries, seeking to further enhance traditional techniques while refining their designs. Others strive to free themselves from the fetters of tradition and create individualistic ceramic wares by pursuing completely new forms adapted to modern society. Still others place an emphasis on the practical aspects of pottery in contemporary life. Though different in orientation, their combined efforts are helping to forge a new identity for pottery making.
Encapsulating the nature and character of Japanese ceramics today, this exhibition presents us with the diversity of vessels being produced by a new generation of Japanese ceramic artists in their quest for something distinctly new.
