Facetnate! is a grant program launched early 2008 to support emerging visual artist/s whose work is strongly influenced by Japan. Facetnate! provides a platform of opportunity for local Australia-based artists to contribute to cultural exchange through various means of artistic expression.

This year, Facetnate! will feature three emerging artists. One of these three will be awarded the Japan Foundation New Artist Award, and will receive an opportunity to visit Japan to further develop his/her field of art. Judging the works will be Art Critic, John McDonald.

Under the Crystal Sky

Pip & Pop (WA)

An array of playfully constructed objects and store-bought materials are used within a landscape of coloured sugar to create an immersive installation. Pip & Pop construct a hyper-coloured wonderland inspiring child-like wonder in a world of utopian dreams.

Love, Thieves and Fear Make Ghosts: old tales and new forms of Japanese ghosts

Andrea Innocent (VIC)

Ghost stories and mythology are present in both Western and Eastern cultures. Using recurring Japanese motifs and imagery highlighting the highly stylised imagery of block prints, Andrea contrasts the ephemeral and nebulous ‘ghost’ subject matter with the dramatic presence of her visual works.

New Friends, Art and Adventure: A Ceramic Art Exhibition

Invited guest artist, Aedan Harris, will exhibit the ceramic works he produced while he was an artist-in-residence at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Japan.

Urban Ghosts
Gemma Cuneo (NSW)

Merging natural imagery with popular culture, Gemma’s works are inspired by the supernatural, the mysterious world of obakemono (creatures and spirit-possessed objects) whereby using modern counterparts, she playfully personifies the quirks and issues that blight society.
