EDO CRAFTS

Six members of the Edo Traditional Craftsmen Association will visit Australia to hold demonstrations showcasing a range of handicrafts from the Edo period (1600-1868). Bamboo screens, embroidery, paper lanterns, traditional tortoiseshell accessories, elegant craft scissors used for art forms such as bonsai and ikebana, and tsumami kanzashi, a delicate hair accessory which accompanies the kimono, will all be on display. The craftsmen will demonstrate how through precision and expert techniques, they are able to turn utilitarian objects into fine works of art.

A one-day demonstration will be held at the Japan Foundation Gallery as well as at other venues around Sydney.
