Tetsuo lives in Tokyo alone. With only an education as far as high school, he is stuck in low-paying jobs and manual labour. He is an outsider, treated as a foreigner because he is from outside Tokyo. It is in this lonely atmosphere that he meets Seiko, a deaf girl he falls in love with and supports until Tetsuo’s father decides to visit.
