The Japan Foundation presents
Carrying the Beat

A free lecture for one exclusive night only with Hiroyuki Takashima, the music mogul who introduced the Beatles to Japan.

Takashima will take us behind the scenes on a revolutionary music tour of Japan, starting from the Beatles to modern day music.

About Hirokyuki Takashima:

Takashima was born in Kobe City, 1934. After graduating from Waseda University, he started working in the record division at Toshiba Electric (now known as EMI Music, Japan). In 1964 he became the first director for The Beatles in Japan and subsequently became the Director of Western Music at Toshiba. From there, he went on to be the Director of Canyon Records, Vice President of London Records and Managing Director of Polydor Records.

At the age of 51, he established his own music management company, Takashima Music Office, and initiated a trend which started the genre known as “J-Classic” – a Japanese-inspired variant of the classical genre.
